Bong vs Bubbler: What Smoke Shops Should Stock of Each

Bong vs Bubbler: What Smoke Shops Should Stock of Each

Bongs and bubblers we stock: 10-inch 5mm beaker, 7-inch mini beaker, 7-inch can bubbler, 5-inch warped bubbler and 5-inch hammer bubbler on white

Quick brief

What do you need to know first?

The short answer on bongs, bubblers and how to stock both.

Quick Answer: A bong is a larger water pipe with a removable bowl and downstem, and a bubbler is a smaller, handheld water pipe with a side carb hole and usually a fixed bowl. Stock both: bongs for the longer session and bubblers for the quick, portable sale. Our hammer bubblers run 5 to 6 inches.

Bong vs bubbler is a question your customers ask at the counter, and your staff needs a quick answer. Here’s how the two differ, who buys each, and how to stock a wall that sells both.

The basics

What’s the difference between a bong and a bubbler?

Start here if your staff gives two different answers.

A bong is a larger water pipe with a removable bowl on a downstem. A bubbler is a smaller, handheld water pipe, usually with the bowl built in and a carb hole on the side.

Both put the smoke through water. That’s why they’re in the same family, and it’s why customers mix them up. The difference is size, build and how you clear the chamber.

Some bubblers blur the line, and customers don’t always use the right word. Go by size and build: a bubbler is a handheld piece, and a bong is the bigger one that sits on a table. Some bubblers, like our 7-inch clear can, take a 14mm bowl.

Beaker and Straight Bongs for the Wall

What I’d stock

What would I stock for a bong and bubbler wall today?

The short list first. The rest of this guide explains each line.

Two or three beakers and straights as the bong core, a mini beaker as the entry bong, and four bubbler styles in the handheld row. Keep the two groups side by side.

If I were setting the wall this month, here’s the list:

  • Bong core: a 10-inch 5mm beaker and a 10-inch 5mm straight, each with a 14mm bowl.
  • Step-up bong: the 10-inch 9mm beaker for customers who want more heft.
  • Entry bong: the 7-inch faceted mini beaker.
  • Bubblers: the 5-inch hammer bubbler, the 5-inch warped bubbler, the 6-inch tree perc hammer bubbler and the 7-inch clear can bubbler.
  • Shortcut: the 16-count variety bubbler bundle if you want all four styles in one order.

That covers the customer who wants a full session piece and the one who wants something small, without doubling up on either.

Under the hood

How do bongs and bubblers clear and clean differently?

The two things your staff gets asked most.

A bong clears when you pull the bowl out. A bubbler usually clears through a carb hole, the way a hand pipe does. Cleaning splits the other way: a bong comes apart, and a bubbler’s chamber is fixed.

On a bong, the bowl and downstem come out, so you can reach each part. The 10-inch beakers we carry ship with a downstem and a 14mm bowl.

A bubbler’s got fewer pieces to lose. The 5-inch hammer bubbler is listed with a built-in bowl and downstem and no removable parts. That makes it simple to hand over, but it doesn’t make the inside any easier to scrub.

Guides disagree on which is easier to clean. Some count fewer parts. Others count parts that come apart. Tell the customer both, and let them pick.

The customers

Why should a shop carry both, and who buys each one?

Two pieces, two jobs, one wall.

Carry both because they do different jobs. A bong is the bigger piece for a longer session. A bubbler is the small, handheld piece a customer can pick up and pay for on the spot.

A bubbler works as a counter piece. It’s small, it’s easy to explain, and it’s quick to ring up. You don’t need a long pitch. A bong takes more room, and it gives you a bigger piece to talk through, with a removable bowl, a downstem and room to trade up.

From the Counter — Ask what they’re putting in it

What I tell shops: a customer who says “water pipe” could mean three things. A bong’s for flower. A dab rig’s for concentrate. A bubbler’s the handheld water pipe.

Water pipe is the umbrella term, and people use it for bongs and dab rigs interchangeably. So when someone asks for one, find out which kind they mean before you walk them to a row.

Stocking plan

How should you display bongs and bubblers together?

One wall, two rows, no confusion.

Put bubblers at eye level near the register and bongs on the wall behind them. Reorder by row, so a sold-out bubbler style doesn’t leave a hole in the handheld row.

The handheld row is the quick sale, and it’s the one people grab, so keep it close to the counter. The bong row is where customers browse, so give it the wall. They’re two different jobs. Our water pipes guide covers the wider mix if you’re building from scratch, and it won’t repeat this.

The fastest way to stock the handheld row is the bundle.

Why most guides get bong vs bubbler wrong

Consumer guides ask which one is better and pick a winner. A shop doesn’t need a winner. Bongs and bubblers do different jobs, so the answer is both, in different amounts.

Stock the bubbler for the quick sale and the bong for the long session. Then let the customer’s question decide which row you start in.

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to what buyers search about bongs and bubblers.

What is the difference between a bong and a bubbler?

A bong is larger and has a removable bowl on a downstem. A bubbler is a smaller, handheld water pipe that usually has a fixed bowl and a side carb hole.

Is a bubbler just a small bong?

Close, but not quite. A bubbler is a handheld water pipe, usually with the bowl built in. A small bong is still a bong, with a removable bowl on a downstem.

Which one cools the smoke more, a bong or a bubbler?

Bongs usually cool the smoke more, because they hold more water and give the smoke a longer path. A bubbler gives a smaller, tighter pull.

Should a smoke shop stock both bongs and bubblers?

Yes. They do different jobs. Bubblers are the small, portable sale, and bongs are the bigger piece for a longer session. One wall with two rows covers both.

Which is easier to clean, a bong or a bubbler?

Guides disagree. A bong comes apart, so you can reach each piece. A bubbler has fewer parts, but its chamber is fixed. Tell the customer both.
