What is a bong, and how does it work?

A bong is a water pipe for dry flower. Smoke is pulled from the bowl, down the downstem, and through water that cools and filters it before the hit reaches the mouthpiece. Percolators add extra filtration by breaking the smoke into smaller bubbles. The result is a smoother, cooler pull than a dry pipe — which is the whole reason customers trade up from a hand pipe.

How do I help a customer pick the right bong?

It comes down to three things — shape, percolation, and thickness. Beakers and straight tubes cover the basics; a percolator is the easy upsell for a smoother hit; and thicker glass (7mm to 9mm) is the pitch for anyone who has cracked a piece before. Match the joint size to any downstem or bowl they already own, and you have closed the sale.

What is a percolator, and which styles sell?

A percolator is a piece of glass inside the bong that splits smoke into smaller bubbles for more water contact and a smoother hit. Common types are tree percs, honeycomb, showerhead, and inline. Honeycomb and tree percs are the easiest sells — the bubbles are visible, so the smoothness is obvious to a customer holding it at the counter.

What is a downstem, and what size do I need?

A downstem is the glass tube that carries smoke from the bowl down into the water. Most bongs run a 14mm or 18mm joint, and a very common setup steps from an 18mm joint down to a 14mm bowl. Stock common bowls and downstems in both sizes so a customer can replace a broken one without buying a whole new bong — that is a fast, high-margin repeat sale.

• 14mm — the most common joint; carry these deepest.
• 18mm — common on larger tubes, often with an 18mm-to-14mm step-down stem.
• Diffused — slits at the bottom add extra bubbling; an easy trade-up from a plain stem.

How much water goes in a bong?

Enough to submerge the downstem slits or perc by about half an inch — usually an inch or two of water. Too much causes splashback into the mouthpiece; too little kills the filtration. A quick fill, test, and adjust is all it takes, and it is the first tip to pass a first-time buyer.

How do you clean a bong?

Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, capped and shaken, then a hot-water rinse. Doing it regularly keeps pulls clean and taste neutral. Pair bongs with bong cleaner and ash catchers — the ash catcher keeps resin out of the bong, so it lifts the ticket and cuts how often the piece needs a deep clean.

Glass vs. silicone vs. ceramic — which should I stock?

Glass is the standard: clean taste, clear water show, and the look most customers expect. Silicone is near-unbreakable and travel-friendly but reads cheaper and can hold odor. Ceramic looks novel but cracks and hides the waterline. For most shops, thick borosilicate glass carries the category — stock glass deep, and add a few unbreakable options for the festival and travel crowd.

Is there an order minimum on wholesale bongs?

Do I need a license to buy wholesale?

You’ll need a seller’s permit or sales-tax (resale) certificate to open a wholesale account — that’s it. No medical or cannabis license is required, since glass and accessories aren’t controlled. Sign up, send us the cert, and we’ll get you approved.

How much margin is in a bong?

Wholesale pricing leaves healthy room. A comfortable markup is about 2x the wholesale price, plus roughly $10 on top for wiggle room. You set your own retail price.
