What is a downstem?

A downstem is the glass tube that runs from the bong’s joint down into the water, carrying smoke from the bowl below the waterline so it bubbles and cools. Diffused downstems add slots or holes at the bottom that break the smoke into smaller bubbles for a smoother pull. It is one of the two parts (along with the bowl) that owners replace most, since it sits in the joint and snaps if a piece tips over.

What is a bong bowl (slide)?

A bong bowl, also called a slide, is the removable cup that holds flower and seats into the top of the downstem. You pull it straight up to clear the chamber, which is why it is also called a slide. Bowls and downstems are sold as separate replacement parts because they break independently — a dropped bowl doesn’t take the stem with it, and vice versa.

What size downstem and bowl do I need? (14mm vs 18mm, male vs female)

Match the part to the bong’s joint. Two numbers decide the fit:

Joint size — 14mm is the most common, then 18mm; 10mm shows up on mini bongs. Measure the opening, not the glass.
Gender — the downstem is usually female into the bong and the bowl is male into the stem, but it varies. If the joint is female, the part going in is male.
Stem length — downstems are also sized by length (in mm or inches); a longer stem sits deeper in taller bongs. Stock a couple of lengths in 14mm.

How do you measure a downstem for a replacement?

Measure a downstem from the top of the ground-glass joint to the very tip of the slotted end, and note the joint size (the diameter where it meets the bong). Length is usually listed in millimeters or in inches like 3.0 or 4.0. The easiest counter tip for customers: bring in the broken stem or the whole bong, and match the joint diameter and length against your stock.

Why is my downstem diffused, and is it better?

A diffused downstem has slits or holes cut into the submerged end that split the smoke into many small bubbles instead of one big one, which cools and filters the hit more. They pull smoother than a plain open-end stem and are what most customers want as an upgrade. They cost a little more, so they’re an easy margin add when someone’s already replacing a broken stem.

How do you clean a bowl and downstem?

Soak both in isopropyl alcohol with a little salt, then shake and rinse — the salt scrubs resin out of the slots and the bowl’s screen area. Tell customers to pull and rinse the bowl regularly so it doesn’t clog. Cleaning supplies and a fresh screen are easy add-ons; point them to your bong cleaner when they grab a replacement part.

Is there an order minimum on wholesale bowls and downstems?

Do I need a license to buy wholesale?

These are high-repeat impulse parts — people break them and need one that day, so they’re not price-shopping. A comfortable markup is about 2x the wholesale price, plus roughly $10 on top for wiggle room. You set your own retail price.
