What is an ash catcher?

An ash catcher is a glass attachment that sits between a bong and its bowl to catch ash, debris, and resin before they hit the main water chamber. It has its own small chamber — sometimes with a percolator — that does a first pass of filtration, which keeps the bong’s water cleaner and cuts down how often the whole piece needs scrubbing. The bowl slots into the ash catcher, and the ash catcher slots into the bong.

What joint size ash catcher do I need — 14mm or 18mm?

The ash catcher’s joint has to match the bong’s joint size, and the two common sizes are 14mm and 18mm. 14mm is the most common on mid-size bongs and the highest-volume size to stock; 18mm shows up on larger rigs and many beaker bongs. The catcher also needs the opposite gender of the bong joint — a female-joint bong takes a male ash catcher, and the bowl that came with the bong then drops into the catcher. When a customer is unsure, 14mm covers the most pieces.

What’s the difference between a 45° and 90° ash catcher?

The angle refers to how the ash catcher sits relative to the bong’s joint, and it has to match so the piece hangs straight instead of leaning. A 45° ash catcher is for bongs with a joint that angles outward, which is most beaker and tube-style bongs. A 90° ash catcher stands straight up and is for bongs with a vertical joint, common on straight-tube and some scientific rigs. Carry both angles in your top sizes so a buyer can match the bong they own.

What perc styles come on ash catchers?

A percolator ash catcher adds a second stage of water diffusion on top of catching ash, breaking smoke into smaller bubbles for a smoother pull. Honeycomb percs use a flat disc of holes for heavy diffusion with low drag; showerhead percs push smoke through a slotted tube; and simpler inline or fixed-stem catchers skip the perc for a cheaper, easier-to-clean option. Perc catchers carry a higher price point, so stocking one or two perc styles next to plain catchers gives a customer a clear upgrade.

How do you clean an ash catcher?

Clean an ash catcher by soaking it in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, then shaking so the salt scrubs the resin loose, and rinsing with hot water. Because the catcher takes the first hit of ash and resin, it builds up faster than the bong, so it needs cleaning more often — that is the whole point of the attachment, since it moves the buildup off the main piece. Stocking bong cleaner next to the catchers turns one sale into two.

Is there an order minimum on wholesale ash catchers?

Do I need a license to buy wholesale?

You’ll need a seller’s permit or sales-tax (resale) certificate to open a wholesale account — that’s it. No medical or cannabis license is required, since glass and accessories aren’t controlled. Sign up, send us the cert, and we’ll get you approved.

How much margin is in ash catchers?

Most shops mark ash catchers up to about 2x the wholesale price, plus roughly $10 on top for wiggle room. They are an easy impulse add-on at the counter when someone is already buying a bong, so the attach rate is high. You set your own retail price.
